iPhone 4’s ‘Retina’ Display Claims Are False Marketing

iPhone screen 4 is probably the best mobile display again, but this resolution does not exceed the retina of man, as Steve Jobs claims.
The math just does not add up, “said Raymond Soneira, president of Display Technologies Mate, who explained that the iPhone four suspected” Retinal Display “is a misleading marketing term.
“It’s pretty close to a perfect reproduction, but Steve has pushed a little too far,” said Soneira.
During his speech, Jobs said 4, the iPhone showed a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. He said the resolution limits of the human retina, which Jobs said was 300 pixels per inch further for display on a foot beyond.
“This shows that there is a magic number right around 300 pixels per inch, if you owned something around 10 to 12 inches away from your eyes, is the limit of the human retina to respective pixels, Jobs said
Soneira, who has a doctorate in theoretical physics from Princeton and is studying the screens of 20 years, said it was bad for the resolution of the eye to be measured in terms of pixels, because the eye actually an angular resolution of 50 cycles per degree. Therefore, if we limit the resolution of the eye with pixels on a screen to compare, we need to convert an angular resolution of linear resolution. After conversions are made, a more accurate “Retinal Display”, a pixel resolution of 477 pixels per inch to 12 inches have Soneira calculated.
He noted that he was convinced Apple has the best phone on the market. As the LCD IPAD, the iPhone screen has 4 In-Plane Switching technology, where the crystal molecules are oriented so that their movement is parallel to the panel instead of perpendicular. For viewers, the result is a wide viewing angle – up to 180 degrees – with brilliant colors. Soneira said we can not realistically need something better than 326 ppi.
In comparison, glossy magazines are usually printed at 300 dots per inch.
Soneira said he wanted to emphasize that “Retinal Display” is a symptom of a wider market within the display industry puffery. In short, many manufacturers exaggerate the claims of their display requirements – any resolution, viewing angle and contrast of light – and they do it because everyone else.
“The smoke and mirrors marketing is now under control,” said Soneira. “Everything that is said is precisely what nonsense superamplified imaginary and the only way to attract attention now is more foreign judgments.”
For example, Soneira discarded televisions from Sharp that Quattrone claimed four primary colors (as opposed to the traditional display three) that it makes no sense. He explained in a previous paper reviews Maximum PC all television content and video is produced and the color balance in the traditional RGB color scheme. Sharp Quattrone fourth primary color is yellow, and there is nothing for her to do for yellow is displayed with mixtures of primary red and green, “he said.
“[Market puffery] companies with good products like Apple to get hurt because they have not really put the specs for everyone is,” said Soneira. “If you and I have the largest screen of the world and we launched it and put real scientific data, we would go bankrupt because our numbers look like the display is made worse.”
